NDCC: 'Basyang' death toll rises to 111

The death toll from Tropical Storm Basyang (Conson), which lashed Luzon last week, grew to 111 Friday even as people initially reported missing have been accounted for.

In its 1 p.m. report, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) noted a decrease in the number of people injured and missing.

"While the number of dead increased from 91 to 111, the number of injured and missing decreased from 35 to 21; and 55 to 48 respectively, because those who were reported missing before were either rescued alive or recovered dead," it said.

But it said search and rescue operations are still ongoing in Quezon and Bicol.

Of the fatalities, 75 were from Southern Luzon; 17 from Bicol; and 19 from Central Luzon. Of the 48 missing, 30 were from Bicol, nine from southern Luzon, eight from Central Luzon, and one from Western Visayas.

The 21 injured included 16 from Central Luzon, four from Bicol, and one from southern Luzon.

On the other hand, damage to property was estimated at P377,975,880, including P138,566,000 in infrastructure and P239,409,880 in agriculture.

A total of 53,486 families or 274,002 individuals from 713 villages of 13 cities and 88 towns in 13 provinces — including Metro Manila — were affected.

The NDCC said Basyang destroyed 3,691 houses and damaged 27,851 others. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
